Henk Scholten - bio

Henk Scholten began his career as an actor and director at different theatre companies in Groningen, Netherlands. In 1987, he organized the first European festival dedicated to the work of Leonard Bernstein. From 1992-1998, Scholten was director of the National Fund for the Performing Arts, where he established a financial support system for Dutch Summer Festivals like Oerol. As director of the City Theatre of Utrecht (1998-2006) Scholten produced numerous international festivals, working together with European institutions like Festival d’Avignon, Wiener Festwochen, and the Hebbel Theatre in Berlin.

Since 2006, Henk Scholten has been the general director of the Theater Instituut Netherland (TIN), which is very active in supporting Dutch theatre and dance abroad. He is also a member of the Executive Board of ITI - the UNESCO related world heritage organization for theatre and dance. Scholten is general director of the New Island Festival.
